OUR IMPACT

David Rashid

I founded The Helpful Kitchen during the pandemic when I read about the food shortages across our country. To be efficient, I came up with the idea of running food drives in apartment buildings, community centers, and places of worship where we could get as many people involved as possible. It was a wonderful experience and in our first few years we donated over 17,000 lbs of food to food pantries. I look forward to starting a Helpful Kitchen chapter at the University of Michigan next year!

I am a high school senior living in New York City. I am a passionate baker and started my own business – Baked by Lil. I donate 10% of my profits to local food pantries as I think we all have to do our part to fight the terrible food insecurity that is present in our city. I am excited to be a member of The Helpful Kitchen team. Together we can work to help as many people as we can.

Carly Rashid

Co-President

I joined The Helpful Kitchen when my brother founded the program. I wanted to help my community and give back to others. Food shortage is a huge issue, and I am so glad to be a part of The Helpful Kitchen and be able to do what I can to alleviate hunger.

I am a junior in high school living in New York City. I am interested in politics and believe in the power of civic engagement to effectuate change. During the pandemic, I saw that food instability in my community was drastically increasing, and I was motivated to take initiative. I discovered the Helpful Kitchen and its food equity mission and applied to join. The organization’s unique donation network has allowed us to help so many food pantries provide for more families.
